Your New Favorite Weekend Getaway or Staycation Destination!
There’s lots of things to do in the Brandywine Valley, which encompasses much of southeastern Pennsylvania and parts of northern Delaware. We’re partial — of course — to attractions near scenic Chadds Ford, and are pleased to offer a respite to travelers seeking adventure in our backyard.
But it’s not just distant travelers that we see at The Gables at Chadds Ford. There are many locals who take advantage of the beautiful scenery, historic stops and fun activities. The rise of staycations and weekend getaways makes us all appreciate what awaits in the Brandywine Valley.
Here are some of our favorite places that are in, or not far from, Chadds Ford. Check ‘em out and then swing by for lunch, brunch, happy hour or dinner. Before you know it, we’ll be your favorite weekend getaway or staycation destination.
Brandywine Battlefield Park
One of the most well-known area destinations, Brandywine Battlefield Park preserves the history of the largest single-day battle of the American revolution: the Battle of Brandywine. Admission includes an inspiring short film, access to the museum and guided house tours of George Washington’s headquarters (Benjamin Ring House) and the Gideon Gilpin House. 1491 Baltimore Pike, Chadds Ford; (610) 459-3342.

Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art
A must for any art lover and nature buff, this gem is a confluence of art and the environment: The Brandywine Conservancy protects and conserves the resources in the Brandywine-Christina watershed, and the Brandywine River Museum of Art engages visitors with unique presentations of American art, particularly the Wyeth family and others hailing from the Brandywine region. Stroll and enjoy! 1 Hoffman’s Mill Rd., Chadds Ford; (610) 388-2700.
Chadds Ford Historical Society
Step back in time three ways: At John Chads’ House (by appointment) and Springhouse, and at the Barns-Brinton House (open May 29 through Sept. 1). The historical society’s mission is to share local history through fun programs and events all year long at these 18th-century venues. You might find historic cooking demos, historic escape room adventures, art sales or seasonal plein air art shows. Fun fact: Our owner, Ann Kolenick, is the youngest board member ever to serve this local treasure. 1736 N. Creek Rd., Chadds Ford; (610) 388-7376.
Longwood Gardens
It’s almost impossible to list all that this must-see attraction has to offer! There are nearly 400 acres open to the public, including a 4-acre conservatory, the historic Peirce-du Pont House, the Webb Farmhouse and Galleries, and a visitor center. There’s also music, performances, theatre, classes, workshops, displays and exhibitions, including the spectacular illuminated fountains at night. Truly something for everyone at every age. 1001 Longwood Rd., Kennett Square; (610) 388-1000.
Clayton Park Golf Course
Want to hit the links, but only up for nine holes? Save money and swing by this charming public golf course that’s part of Delaware County’s largest park and rec facility. Great for beginners and pros seeking a quick round. There’s a pro shop on-site in case you forgot anything or need some advice. Bonus: Fees are super reasonable at this county-run course. 50 Conchester Highway, Garnet Valley; (610) 459-4910.

Winterthur
A bit further away in northern Delaware — but worth the visit — is one of the du Pont family’s many stunning properties. Winterthur was Henry Francis du Pont’s childhood home, and is now considered the premier museum of American decorative arts, boasting nearly 90,000 pieces made or used in America between roughly 1640 and 1860. A horticulturist by trade, du Pont’s stunning mansion and grounds alone are worth the trip. The museum is closed Monday; the library is closed Saturday and Sunday, except from April to December, when it’s open on the second Saturday of every month. 5105 Kennett Pike, Winterthur, Del.; (302) 888-4600.
